This test detects the HbE mutation in the hemoglobin gene, which causes the substitution of glutamic acid with lysine at position 26 (Glu-Lys) in the beta-globin chain. It is a common hemoglobinopathy in Southeast Asia and can result in mild anemia or complications when inherited with other hemoglobinopathies like thalassemia.
